According to the national statistics, a report of child abuse and neglect is made every 10 seconds. Every year there are nearly 5,000 reported cases of child abuse in Hawaii alone throughout our local communities. Children who suffer this oppression endure physical, emotional and psychological scars for life. Where development and behavior start in the home, parenting affects us all. Children imitate and copy behavior they learn and see in their homes, and being raised in an abusive environment can influence their behavior now and later.
Children who grow up in families affected by neglect and abuse tend to perpetuate the cycle of abuse. To express themselves, they often seek attention at school by being disruptive and/or by bullying other children. They are also more prone to teenage pregnancy and committing suicide. These children grow up in our neighborhoods and become abusers of their own children, become addicted to substances, may steal from their friends, family and neighbors, or end up in our prison systems. Their violent tendencies may even lead to murder.
