Client Father with Son ReadingFatherhood Support Program

The Fatherhood Support Program consists of two, 8-week, classes, both including culturally competent curriculum, geared towards all types of fathers; including full-time, part-time and hanai dads. Classes help to improve the knowledge, skills and abilities for low-income, non-custodial fathers living in East Hawai’i.

The program will expedite the father’s connection to their culture by using the culturally appropriate practice of “talking story” while learning, and then sharing a meal together as a means to building and improving relationships with each other. The purpose of the group is for fathers to have the opportunity to build an informal support network, as well as carry on the learned practices to their children.

Fathers learn to facilitate job interviews, communicate with other service providers in their lives, and improve communication with the mother(s) of their children. By helping fathers create a safe and stable environment for themselves and their children, they feel better about themselves, build nurturing relationships with their children and repair family relationships.
